Australia’s top Angus genetics will be spotlighted on the world stage with the Angus On Ice Frozen Genetics Sale.

The inaugural auction, interfaced through AuctionsPlus, will offer some of the country’s most highly sought-after frozen embryos and semen.

It's set to be a highlight of this year’s World Angus Forum (WAF) on May 4, in conjunction with the WAF Zoetis Expo in Tamworth.

Many of the embryos collected for the sale are export-eligible, marking what has been described as “the start of something extraordinary”.

Erica Halliday, Chair of the World Angus Forum Committee, believes this year’s forum in Australia will be remembered as a turning point for the global trade of Angus genetics.

“With the release last year of the World Angus Evaluation (WAE) between the two largest herdbooks of Angus cattle in the world, as well as Canada, we are finally starting to see how each country performs on an ever-expanding global stage,” she said.

The sale presents an opportunity for Angus breeders worldwide to diversify their genetic base and strengthen selection pressure across economically significant traits.

According to Mrs Halliday, most genetic material has historically been imported from the US and Canada. However, she believes the WAE has demonstrated the progress Australian Angus has made, particularly in carcase traits. Additionally, the ability of Australian Angus to thrive in pasture and arid conditions places local producers in a strong position.

Mrs Halliday has already seen growing international interest in Australian genetics, both for their diversity and the quality of the national herd. She also highlighted Australia’s leadership in genetic methane reduction research, which is improving productivity and efficiency.

“In a predominantly grass-fed system and one of the most arid environments on earth, I can only presume that if our Angus genetics do well here, they will positively thrive in other countries around the world.”

She added that the next step is to streamline protocols and import restrictions to facilitate the free trade of genetics for the benefit of all.

Likewise Zoetis AngusEXPO Coordinator Jake Phillips believes “the Angus On Ice sale is set to redefine how breeders access and trade frozen Angus genetics.”

“This initiative reflects our commitment to providing members with innovative platforms to showcase the quality and versatility of Angus genetics on the world stage,” Mr Phillips said.

“We encourage all eligible members to seize this opportunity to participate in what promises to be a significant event in the industry, one that will be remembered for generations to come.”

Participation in the sale, which is run in partnership with Elders, is exclusive to members of Angus Australia and the Red Angus Society of Australia, including international members, ensuring a premium showcase of elite genetics.

All entries must undergo rigorous genetic verification, including sire verification, genomically enhanced Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), and genetic condition testing. The sale offerings will include frozen embryos and semen, with full transparency regarding location, costs, and export eligibility.

Entries are capped at 175, with one per member, plus an additional lot permitted for exhibitors of the Zoetis AngusEXPO. Vendors are encouraged to submit entries by March 31, 2025, to meet sale eligibility and promotional deadlines. An entry fee of $500 per lot applies, split between initial submission and post-sale.
