Why density is becoming the most valuable metric in hay and forage

Traditionally, the conversation has centered around ‘how many bales per hour can you produce?’ However, with operating conditions continuing to squeeze productivity gains and efficiencies, the more practical conversation starts to shift to how much value per bale can you produce?KUHN’s Technical Support Specialist, Gareth Herbert said: “From a technical standpoint, density is no longer just an output metric, it’s a measure of how efficiently the machine is converting crop into a transportable product without overloading the system.”

This shift in thinking is making bale density a key commercial metric for producers to track across their operations. Dense, consistent bales directly influence transport efficiency, fuel usage, handling costs, and storage footprint. And as more producers and contractors chase density, a second reality emerges: the traditional way of achieving it often comes with trade-offs in power demand, peak load stress, driveline wear and inconsistent performance in challenging crops. This is where the density conversation becomes less about brute force and more about engineering: how do you increase compaction without paying for it through high fuel costs, power hunger and mechanical punishment?

The logic is simple: more dense bales carry more tonnes per bale, stack, and truckload, which means fewer loads, easier handling, and more efficient storage. KUHN’s SB1290 iD High-Density Baler uses the patented TWINPACT double plunger system to achieve high bale densities while limiting peak machine loads. Delivering up to 25% higher bale density requires roughly twice the force of a conventional large square baler, but the TWINPACT plunger system splits this force.

“The TWINPACT system changes how force is applied within the bale chamber - it distributes the load across two stages rather than delivering a single peak impact, which is what allows us to increase density without a proportional increase in stress,” Mr Herbert said.

POWER DENSITY: the KUHN Solution

The SB1290 iD High-Density Baler is also equipped with KUHN’s POWER DENSITY system. It uses a single feeder fork design to show how a well-engineered active pre-chamber can reduce complexity. It delivers consistently filled flakes and heavy, square-edged bales regardless of swath conditions. KUHN’s patented torque regulation system continuously monitors baler load and adjusts performance to keep an effective balance between throughput and bale density. As crop volume and swath consistency change, the system helps manage peak load demands so the baler can maintain output without compromising bale formation. For the operator, this means more consistent bale density, steadier and more efficient machine performance in variable conditions, and reduced risk of overloading the driveline during high-capacity operation.
