Palgrove's Underdog fetches top price of $75,000

The spring bull selling season hit full stride this week, with AuctionsPlus linking 23 cattle studs to buyers across the country and beyond. This week's highlights feature a range of breeds including Santa Gertrudis, Shorthorn, Charolais and Angus. 

From the top of Queensland to the tip of Tasmania, online bidders generated strong competition, helping to drive impressive results and secure leading genetics across a wide range of seedstock operations.

We bring you some of the standout results from the week ending Friday, September 12.

Palgrove Annual Bull Sale

To Chinchilla QLD, where the Palgrove Annual Bull Sale opened with two Charolais bulls selling for over $70,000 within the first five lots of the day. The sale lineup included a range of Charolais, Ultrablack and Brangus bulls. The sale wrapped with all 180 bulls selling for an average of $19,483, and a top price of $75,000. 

In the breakdown, 93 Charolais bulls sold to a top of $75,000, and averaged $20,215. 87 Ultrablack bulls sold to a top of $55,000, PALGROVE UNTOLD (P) PV (lot 106), and returned an average price of $18,701. 

Lot 3, Palgrove Underdog U1283E, was knocked down for $75,000 to an online bidder from McKinlay, QLD, via AuctionsPlus.

The two-year old Charolais bull is described as “the first of three Landmark ET sons in a row—each bred with precision and backed by strong donor female lines. Simply put, we can’t make them any better.”

Underdog's sire, Palgrove Landmark, has now surpassed $1.22 million in progeny sales, topping at $80,000, with over 17 sons selling for $20,000 or more.

There was spirited online activity brought to the sale by AuctionsPlus bidders. With 466 online bids placed across 148 lots across the sale, online bidders secured 38 lots across 21 successful buyers.  

Cree Santa Gertrudis Sale

To Thangool, QLD, where the Cree Santa Gertrudis Bull Sale 2025 achieved a full clearance, with all 82 bulls sold to average $14,512, generating a gross of $1.19 million.

The standout of the sale was Lot 3, selling for $57,000 to Brigadoon Cattle Co.

Sired by ROSEVALE QUICKSILVER Q256, Vanguard V218 (P) was described to "combine the profit driving traits of Growth, EMA and Carcass all ranking in the top 10%, with positive Fats and above average fertility rounding out the graph". 

AuctionsPlus online engagement was again significant, with 274 logins recorded. Across the catalogue, there were 2,900 views, with 48 lots attracting online bids.

Online buyers secured 10 bulls, with an online average of $11,800 and a top of $15,000 (Lots 14, 25 and 37).

Ben Nevis Angus Bull Sale 

To Walcha, NSW, where the  Ben Nevis Bull Sale offered 91 sires, with 90 selling to average $15,011.The single retained bull was held back by the stud despite attracting a strong $28,000 bid.

The sale topped at $30,000, paid for a yearling bull, BEN NEVIS VANGUARD V205 (lot 44), while across the younger sires the average settled at $14,382. The 41 sires aged 18 months averaged $15,707, topping at $26,000.

Ben Nevis Vanguard V205, went to respected stud breeders Jim and Jackie Wedge of Ascot Cattle Co, Warwick QLD. At just 13 months and weighing 554kg, Vanguard presented with strong EBVs including: top 9% for 400-day weight (+112), top 16% for intramuscular fat (+4), and top 12% for calving ease direct (+7.3).

Online competition was robust, with 627 logins recorded, generating 6,882 catalogue views.

AuctionsPlus hosted 25 online bidders active throughout the sale, with 11 successful, securing 15 bulls.

The Grove's Annual Helmsman Bull Sale

Running online via AuctionsPlus, The Grove's Annual Helmsman Bull Sale achieved full clearance, with 60 bulls selling to average $11,250. In this year's lineup, the stud had a range of red, black and roan bulls on offer. 

The sale topped at $33,000, with Lot 39 purchased by Deepwater Farming Company Pty Ltd. The top selling sire, THE GROVE MITTIEBAH U0771 (P), is a two-year old, red homozygous Shorthorn bull. 

Bulls were widely dispersed, heading across Queensland and New South Wales, with one volume buyer securing a line of bulls to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

Online activity was particularly strong,  3,650 catalogue views. A total of 380 online bids were placed, with 30 online bidders active, with 23 of them successful.
