Following fruitful rainfall across December and into the start of 2022 across key goat producing regions, AuctionsPlus goat listings had a record monthly offering of 34,195 head listed across the four weekly commercial goat sales held in January. With goat production growing and demand booming, there is no surprise listings have increased 225% year-on-year for the month of January. Big offerings and strong demand are indicative of robust buoyancy across the goat sector with buyer confidence culminated by ongoing positive seasonal conditions, strong framed stock and an abundance of available feed.
Despite a limited offering of 4,798 head in December which saw high prices and demand across all categories, excellent prices continued into January sales which further highlights the robust position of the goat market.
Goat listings remain concentrated in Southern Queensland and Western New South Wales with listings totalling 14,829 and 14,428 head, respectively. On a state basis, Queensland listed 53% of the total goat offering while New South Wales and Victoria accounted for 46% and 1%. On the purchasing side total clearance for the month reached 76% with Queensland accounting for 56% of all purchases. The regions of Western and Southern Queensland secured the largest volume for the month.
Rangeland does were the largest category, accounting for 50% of listings for the month. Clearance rates reached 75% with prices averaging $134/head or 590c/kg liveweight. A highlight included 620 does from St George, Queensland aged 1-5 years which weighed 30.5kg liveweight and returned $170/head or 557c/kg liveweight.
Rangelands bucks had a total of 6,238 head offered for the month which was met with strong demand as the category achieved a 94% clearance. Prices averaged $108/head or 501c/kg liveweight. From Morven, Queensland a line of 410 bucks aged 6-12 months weighing an average of 29.6kg returned $123/head.
Purebred Boer does accounted for 9% of listings with 3,213 head offered. Prices for the category ranged from $150-$170 to average $154.5/head with clearance rates reaching 63%. First cross Boer/Rangeland does made up 10% of listings for the month with 3,632 head offered in the category. Clearance rates held firm at 68% for the month with prices averaging $143/head or 760c/kg liveweight. A large offering of 1,206 head split into two even lines from Mungallala, Queensland consisted of first cross does aged 6-8-months weighing 18.5kg liveweight which returned $140/head or 756c/kg liveweight.
Limited numbers of purebred Kalahari goats were offered online for January. Boer/Kalahari does had a total of 1,252 head offered across the month with the category averaging $213/head. A highlight included a line of 7-8-month-old does from Goondiwindi, Queensland which weighed 25.3kg liveweight and returned $256/head.
