Monthly Goat Comments - April 2022

It was a much quieter April for AuctionsPlus commercial goat listings, with only 5,559 head offered – back 72% from the previous month. The main driver for the lower throughput was the public holiday induced shortened weeks, which also had commercial sheep and lamb offerings down by 53% for the same period. Top goat listing regions for the month included Western Queensland (2,149 head), Southern Queensland (2,060 head) and Western NSW (1,022 head).

Rangeland bucks accounted for 39% of the monthly offering, at 2,165 head. Prices for the category averaged $106/head, or 389c/kg lwt, which was back $1 from last month. Demand held very strong across the reduced monthly offering, with a 100% clearance rate registered. A highlight for the month included three even lines of 6-8-month-old bucks from Morvern, Queensland, totaling 1,500 head. Weighing an average of 34kg lwt, the bucks returned between $110-112/head, to average 507c/kg lwt, selling to a buyer from Longreach, Queensland.

Rangeland doe listings totaled 2,566 head, which accounted for 46% of the total offering. Prices for the category ranged from $80-$175/head, to average $120/head or 417c/kg. Clearance rates remained robust for the month at 73% for the category. From Wentworth, NSW, a line of 193 1-5-year-old Rangeland does weighing 30kg lwt returned $126/head, or 420c/kg lwt, which will travel to Ladysmith, NSW.

Boer does had a total of 66 head offered across the month, with the category registering a clearance of 53%. Prices averaged $559/head, or 1,187 c/kg lwt for the month – an increase of $264/head on the March average. The significant price change across the category was primarily a reflection of breeding and quality of the offering. From Hermidale, NSW, a line of 8 two-year-old purebred does weighing 46kg lwt returned $636/head, or 1,371 c/kg lwt, destined for Walgett, NSW.

Boer bucks registered a 100% clearance across the 41 head offered for the month. Prices for the category averaged $301/head, or 738c/kg lwt. From Katamatite, Victoria, a line of 28-30-month-old Boer bucks weighing 73kg returned $383/head - selling $150 over their reserve price to a buyer in Wilton, NSW.
