Weekly Cattle Comments - 12.03.21

Written by AuctionsPlus | Mar 12, 2021 3:30:00 AM

A 21% increase in AuctionsPlus cattle offerings this week, at 19,226 head, contributed to a widespread fall in prices across most categories. Prices were back across eight of the ten young cattle categories, while averages for the indicative breeding stock categories were varied.

A 73% increase in the number of 200-280kg steers offered this week, at 3,245 head, was the main driver behind a $72 decline in the average, at $1,383/head. For 280-330kg steers, the average price eased $55, to $1,540/head, with slightly more head offered than last week.

From Rolleston Qld, 82 5–9-month-old, weaned Santa Gertrudis steers, averaging 234.4kg liveweight, sold to $1,455/head. Comparatively, 45 unweaned Angus steers from Armidale, NSW, 7-8 months old and averaging 224.4kg liveweight, sold to $1,620 head.

Interestingly, while supplies this week declined for the heaviest steer category by 300 head, the average price dropped $164, to average $1,855/head.

PTIC heifers are attracting keen interest and offers from buyers, but subdued clearance rates, with prices averaging $38 higher on last week, at $2,294/head.

Highlighting the span of AuctionsPlus sales, 110 PTIC cows out of Richmond, Qld, this week averaged $1,250/head. These Brahman PTIC cows ranged from 9-16yrs old, were assessed 100% PTIC, averaged 445.5kg liveweight, with 89% at FS2. In the same sale, 49 PTIC Angus cows, from Glenburn, Vic, 7-9-years-old, averaging 593.2kg liveweight, sold to $2,120/head.

The past week saw some much-needed falls through central and southern Queensland, with the forecast indicating the potential for much more to follow in the coming week. Given that these two regions had been offering up significant supplies for the almost unquenchable demand for young cattle and breeding stock through eastern Australia in recent months, widespread and overdue falls could squeeze already very tight supplied lines.
