But did you know that the German manufacturer also made tractors dating back to the 1930s?
A rare three cylinder air cool diesel Porsche 339 from the 1960s fetched $30,000 at a sale on AuctionsPlus.
The vintage and tractor collectable auction featured 13 lots all from the one owner.
Listing agent Cameron West from Nutrien Online-Ag said he didn’t realise they existed until he was putting the catalogue together for a client.
“I didn’t even know Porsche made tractors until I met with this gentleman a few months ago. It went well above value. The guy that bought the Porsche was only in his 30s,” Mr West said.
Online-Ag is part of the Nutrien Ag solutions family and holds an annual vintage tractor and collectable sale. But this sale was a special one.
“This sale was a single vendor sale. It was a gentleman I’ve known for a long time and we were just having a chat over a cuppa one day and he said ‘I want to sell all of these tractors,’ so we listed them all and sold the lot. They have no farming capacity, it's all nostalgic value,” Mr West said.
Other lots included a 1937 McCormick Deering W-12, which sold for $3700, a McCormick Standard W-9, which sold for $6500 and a 1960 John Deere 1010, which sold for $8400.
Mr West said mostly collectors purchased the tractors.
“There’s a variety of reasons people buy these but they’re mainly collectors we deal with. Three were sold to Nelsons Bay, a couple into south east Queensland and the rest were scattered all over the east coast.”
He said the vendor needed space in his shed to make way for a new collection.
“Every tractor was fully restored between 10 and 15 years ago and parked in the shed and now he’s making a new collection to work on and we’ll probably put them up for sale at the end of the year or next year.”
Mr West said any keen collectors might find something at their upcoming annual sale, which will be held in September.
“We pride ourselves on the integrity and quality of our auctions. We have twenty lots listed in that sale so far.”
