Plough disc fire pits are becoming increasingly popular, so how can you build one yourself?
Backyard fire pits are a great addition to your home.
During the pandemic when we were all stuck inside during lockdown, those lucky enough to have a large backyard or property probably spent many nights in the fresh air around a campfire.
We saw the rise of camp oven cooking and bbqs come back into vogue as well. People put down dining chairs and tables and added fire pits.
With the rise in popularity, even city dwellers jumped in on the action by buying already made fire pits. Then, there was a move towards building your own.
Recently there’s been plenty of activity at clearing sales and on social media with people looking to purchase used plough discs.
Selling agent David Russell from Landmark said plough discs have become a popular auction item at clearing sales.
“We’re seeing demand increase not only for farm equipment but antiques and other items as well. From plough disks, to wool tables and wool baskets our online sales are through to roof.”
Many people are chasing plough discs for an easy way to make a fire pit at home, which looks like a flower. For those keen to give it a try the most basic of pits only requires seven old plough discs. One for the stand and six for the pit.
You can use a bit of pipe or an old car spring for the stem. Simply weld them together in a bowl-like shape. The size and number of discs used can grow from there. You can even add handles and horseshoes to act like a rotisserie.
If you don’t want a single stem stand, some people weld three or four legs to their fire pits. If you aren’t up to building one yourself there’s plenty you can find online.
