It is set to be a huge Friday for AuctionsPlus cattle sales, with a total of 13 auctions and over 17,500 head of cattle on offer. For the weekly commercial sales, the Eastern States Cattle Sale will have 164 lots offered, while the two Weaner and Yearling Sales will present 332 lots – approximately 17,002 head across the three sales. With another nine feature and stud sales and the regular Tasmanian Cattle Auction, there is sure to be plenty of actions throughout the day.

Seasonally, the total preliminary commercial offering for this week, at 17,002 head, is 30% larger than the corresponding period last year. With another big offering this week, total commercial AuctionsPlus cattle offerings for the past six weeks has now exceeded 100,000 head – which is 28,000 head greater than the same period in 2020.

As mentioned in previous weeks analysis, the fact that prices have withstood such a consistent increase in supplies throughout the short days of July and August is both amazing and perplexing. Except for one huge week in early September last year, the online offerings being recorded in the past six weeks are more in-line with those seen from early October 2020 onwards.

As such, are the current numbers a reflection of cattle being pulled forwards a couple of months, lured by the record high prices? Are the higher numbers now, likely to create a “hole in supplies” once spring really kicks in? While the answer to the above questions will be answered in time, history has shown that nothing can drag cattle out of the paddocks and into the yards like high prices!

With the huge selection of lots offered this week, some of the below lines should be worth watching.
