In what is starting to develop as a “week on, week off” trend, this week sees another big listing, with preliminary offerings for the AuctionsPlus commercial National Sheep Sale and National Lamb Sale hitting 112,208 head – up 12% on the corresponding week last year.
With early September’s sunny days and warmer temperatures, there is another good run of new season lambs in the market this week. Although reports continue to indicate the wet winter has left many lambs well behind the growth curve, it has also primed many producers for the spring flush. While the largely higher prices of last week, with four of the six lamb categories increasing, will again be tested with the higher supply, it is anticipated that demand will easily accommodate the additional numbers.
Despite the sharp increase in Merino ewe hogget numbers last week, the demand was excellent, with 87% of the 21,000 head selling, averaging $22/head higher. Unflinching demand for breeding lines continues to underpin the sheep market, with a very tight 1,496 ewes with LAF listed for sale this week.
