Rain continues to hold numbers back

This week’s AuctionsPlus commercial sheep and lamb offerings rebounded 18% on last week, to approximately 120,000 head. Given last week’s very wet disruption to the market, and more rain expected again this week, producers’ frustration continues to be compounded, whether it’s for marketable livestock or harvestable weather conditions.

Even with the 24% contraction in supplies in the past two weeks, AuctionsPlus sheep and lamb offerings since the start of September have totaled 1.72 million head – an increase of 20%, or 285,000 head on the same period in 2020. However, when paddocks dry out and reliable access is resumed, the supply of lambs is expected to bounce back closer to 150,000 head in coming weeks.

On the back of last weeks results, demand is expected to again be robust for the crossbred and composite lines, while the clearance rate for Merino ewe lambs remains well below average. One of the most notable contraction in supplies last week was for NSM Merino ewe hoggets and Merino ewes.
