As the Western Bulldogs did it tough in the AFL Grand Final on Saturday, the best and hardest “working” dogs were available through AuctionsPlus on the weekend, with very favorable results for vendors at the Lucindale (SA) and Geurie (NSW) working dog sales.
In SA, the Lucindale interfaced working dog sale was held, with buyers available to attend in person and online. The top result for the sale was lot 6, Josie – which sold to $29,000. Out of Englefield, Victoria. ”Josie” was a 2 year, 10-month-old, black and tan Kelpie bitch. Given the sale was held on the weekend of the AFL Grand Final, the aptly named “Bont” – a 30 months old male black and tan Kelpie sold to $13,000 and was described as “has a big engine and is always keen to shift sheep”.
For Lucindale, the average price for the sale finished at $9,964 for online purchases, with 8,104 catalogue views. Attending the sale, recently appointed AuctionsPlus Regional Agency Services Representative for SE South Australia and Western Victoria, Ellen Simpson, commented that “confidence and high prices are not just limited to the livestock sector, with the dogs purchased on the day a reflection of the skill and patience of the trainers”.
The largest of the two auctions for the weekend was the fittingly named, Geurie Golden Collar Working Dog Auction, which featured 51 dogs. The top price for the sale, at $30,100 went to lot 26, “Cabra Glebe Big” – a 27-month-old male Border Collie. Overall, the Geurie sale reached an 83% clearance rate, with an average selling price of $6,561/dog. With the sale viewing available through the week prior, there was 22,087 catalogue views, with 162 active bidders across the sale and a total of 2,368 individual bids.
