This week's Eastern State Cattle Sale, commencing Friday 11am (EST) will see a unique offering across four lots - which is sure to bring plenty of attention from all sections of the market. As part of a larger offering, Shacorrahdalu Angus, Jugiong, will offer 96 PTIC Angus heifers across four lots as PTIC with foetal sexed embryos – two male lots and two female lots.
While not an AuctionsPlus first, the targeted marketing of embryo sexed PTIC breeders is still in a developing phase. As per Friday’s sale, the 51 male embryo sexed PTIC heifers will be sold in two lots of 26 (Lot 614) and 25 head (Lot 615), respectively. Similarly, the 45 female embryo sexed PTIC heifers will also be sold in two lots of 23 (Lot 616) and 22 head (Lot 617).
Marketed through Nutrien Wagga, the assessment of the heifers states that “they show excellent genetics, type and present in ideal condition for this stage of the pregnancy. They are all preg-tested in calf to an elite AI Sire in Rennylea L508 whose quality is of the highest calibre”. Averaging 407.1kg/head liveweight, the 51 PTIC heifers retaining male calves are expected to calve in the week commencing March 9, 2022.
From a market analysis and reporting point of view, the differentiation between the male and female lots will be closely scrutinised. Will the assessed female embryos bring a higher return than their male counterpart, as buyers amid the herd rebuild, look to “purchase” a breeding genetic two-for-one? Or will the male embryo bearing PTIC heifers establish a premium, given the 5-10% premium steers traditionally bring in a “normal season” when sold?
