Weebollabolla Shorthorn bull tops at $105,000

With the Spring stud selling season well-underway, this week's stud sale spotlight for the week ending Friday, September 13 saw AuctionsPlus interface 28 stud sales across the country.

Angus offerings continue to dominate the stud sale listings with 50% of auctions this week showcasing Angus genetics. However, it was a Shorthorn sire who took the lead of the highest grossing bull interfaced through AuctionsPlus this week.

Weebollabolla Shorthorn bull tops at $105,000

TheWeebollabolla 57th Annual Bull Sale’ has more than doubled their previous stud record of $47,500 set in 2023, whilst also taking the lead for the top-priced bull interfaced through AuctionsPlus this week.

The Weebollabolla Shorthorn stud based in Moree NSW, have celebrated their 151 year tenure in the Shorthorn breed, smashing their previous stud record by $57,500.

The red and white Shorthorn bull WEEBOLLABOLLA TINKLER T109 topped the sale at $105,000, a season record for Shorthorn’s interfaced through AuctionsPlus this spring.

The homozygous polled bull described as “always a standout” has been praised for its “depth, length, an excellent temperament and quality numbers to back him up. The first son for his dam Words P197.”

The sale averaged $11,417 and achieved 91% clearance.

The spirited online action secured five lots to AuctionsPlus on behalf of online buyers. The top price online was $21,000 with WEEBOLLABOLLA THEO T50 (Lot 20) sold to a buyer in Longreach.

New heights for Ben Nevis: Ultra sparks $100,000

To Walcha NSW, where a yearling sire achieved a stud record at the Ben Nevis Angus bull sale’, taking out the auction’s top sale price of $100,000.

The sale topper, BEN NEVIS ULTRA U223 (Lot 32), weighed 642 kilograms at 14 months, and was sold to Boambee Angus at East Seaham.

The sale achieved full clearance across the 83 lots on offer, with one passed-in bull finding a buyer before sale's end. Overall, the sale achieved an average of $15,590.

Of the 18-month-old bulls, 41 lots, the top price was $56,000 to average $16,390 while the 42 yearling sires averaged $14,809.

The spirited onsite was challenged by the presence of AuctionsPlus’ online activity. AuctionsPlus secured the opening lot, with BEN NEVIS UNDERTAKER U063 (Lot 1) sold for $56,000 to an online buyer. In total, 16 bulls were purchased by online buyers across the auction offerings.

Palgrove power

The ‘Palgrove Annual Bull Sale’ 2024 was another strong sale for the Palgrove Pastoral Company. The sale achieved full clearance over a line of 83 Charolais bulls and 86 Ultrablack bulls.

The Charolais bulls sold topped at $60,000 and averaged $20,312. The 86 UltraBlack bulls sold to $52,500 and averaged $19,174.

The top price reached at the sale was $60,000 with PALGROVE TROUT (PP) purchased online to the Narrabri based Minnie-Vale Charolais stud. The homozygous polled Charolais sire is a part of the first Queenstown progeny to be offered by Palgrove.

Full clearance for Landfall

Across the Tasman the ‘LANDFALL ANGUS SPRING BULL SALE 2024’ achieved full clearance and topped the previous years top price by more than $30,000.

Held out of Launceston Tasmania, the stud sold its complete offering of 237 yearling and two-year old sires, achieving an overall sale average of $12,362.

The top-priced bull was the two-year old LANDFALL PHEASANTRY T1832 (Lot 14), sold for $75,000 to Gilmandyke Pastoral, Orange, NSW.

The Landfall Angus Spring Bull Sale 2023 top price of $40,000 was beaten by $35,000 with this years sale of LANDFALL PHEASANTRY T1832.

AuctionsPlus’ Business Development Manager Zoe Macfarlan attended the sale on Wednesday, and said it was a strong sale for Landfall this Spring, clearing 100% of the 237 bulls offered under the hammer.

"The tough season experienced in the lead up to sale day meant a number of yearling bulls were withdrawn but will be right to go in the next month or so," Ms Macfarlan said.

"The sale achieved a strong average of $15,101 for the two-year old bulls and $9,147 for the yearling bulls, with a total sale average of $12,363.

"15 online buyers from NSW, VIC & TAS secured 38 lots and a total of 20 active bidders placed bids on 147 lots, 62% of the offering," Ms Macfarlan said.

This year’s top priced bull was a full-brother to LANDFALL PHEASANTRY S1755, bought by Dunoon Angus, Holbrook, NSW, for $240,000 in March 2023.

Marathon Waygu

The ‘ MARATHON WAGYU 2024 PLATINUM AUCTION’ was another flying result for Wagyu genetics this stud selling season. The sale achieved 94% clearance and topped at $14,000 with the sale of MARATHON MICHIFUKU U0151 (Lot 19), purchased by an online bidder.

Additionally, Lot 38 was a notable listing with all sale proceeds dedicated to charity. The semen package featured two straws from Marathon Wagyu's newest bull, Coochin T1679 (SRQF22T1679). The lot was purchased for $800 and will be donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Sunset sale for Sumo Cattle Co

Heading to Grafton NSW, where the renowned Wagyu stud Sumo Cattle Co, held their last auction under the brand with the Sumo seedstock herd recently purchased by Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Agriculture.

However, the Sumo Cattle Co Wagyu Sale’ retained strong results with the sale topping at $17,000 and achieving an average of $7,889.

The sale topper, SUMO CATTLE CO ITOSHIGENAMI 22T037 (Lot 3) was secured by AuctionsPlus on behalf of an online bidder. In its description, SUMO ITOSHIGENAMI 22T037 is sired by Sumo ITOSHIGENAMI C0158, and sire of Coates ITOSHIGENAMI G113, "one of the highest ranked bulls in Australia."

In one of the largest Wagyu herd transactions in recent times, the Sumo Wagyu seedstock herd was purchased by Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Agriculture and 2GR Wagyu supply chain.

The Sumo herd was developed over 33 years by Wagyu industry pioneer, Dr Simon Coates, who passed away three years ago.

Santa Gertrudis showdown

Heading to Taroom QLD, where ‘The Dawson Valley Santa Gertrudis Sale’ has taken the lead for the highest selling Santa Gertrudis Bull interfaced through AuctionsPlus this spring stud selling season.

In the sale breakdown, 58 out of 70 bulls sold for an overall average of $10,784, with the sale reaching 83% clearance in head.

The top price achieved on the day was $37,500 with JAMALLY UTAH U44 (Lot 3) knocked down to Dean and Jade Hague, Rockingham Santa stud, Tara Station, Condobolin, NSW. The top price rose $9,500 from the top price of $18,000 in 2023.

The sale's second-top seller was ANNABRACH ULTRA U124 (Lot 11) sold for $23,000 to the Juandah Aggregation, Wandoan QLD.

AuctionsPlus secured lot 20 for $5,000 with over 70 registered bidders onsite, online users were competing against a spirited onsite crowd.
