Winter chill slows online White Suffolk offerings

White Suffolk listings through AuctionsPlus commercial sheep and lamb sales during the first half of 2022 fell by 5%, to 152,816 head, as a fast start to the year was eroded by slow numbers through June. With a large portion of numbers anticipated to hit the box in the back end of the year, White Suffolk listings remain on track to challenge last year’s record-breaking numbers.

Reviewing listings for January to June, mixed sex listings registered a considerable jump, with 97,047 head offered – up 49% on the same time last year. Ewe lambs and SIL ewes have registered the biggest drop in listings, at 23,945 head and 10,983 head – down 58% and 56%, respectively.

Clearance rates for White Suffolk lines tend to follow a steady pattern, with the first half of the year often seeing subdued clearance rates and listings - while the end to the year is highlighted by a surge in listings and spike in clearance rates. So far in 2022, Clearance rates have averaged 68%, which is equal to the same period last year in 2021. Historically since 2016, the first half of the year has averaged 76% clearance, while the second half of the year has averaged 84%.

Assessing state break downs, NSW and Victoria make up majority of listings, with 60,788 and 55,158 head, respectively (Figure 3), with Central West NSW the largest selling region, with 15,707 head. Purchases for the breed are dominated by NSW, with the state accounting for 53% of purchases so far in 2022, at 56,445 head.

2022 has seen mixed pricing across the sheep market, with selective buying and post-sale negotiations a large contributor to recent price trends. White Suffolk prices in 2022 have highlighted the continued demand for breeding stock, with SIL White Suffolk ewes representing the biggest price jump for the January-June period, averaging $341/head for pure SIL ewes and $314/head for first cross SIL ewes - up 8% and 14%, respectively. White Suffolk mixed sex lambs have seen a slight drop in prices to date, with first cross mixed sex lambs averaging $157/head – back 1% on 2021 prices, while second cross mixed sex lambs are back 8%, averaging $158/head.
