Monthly Goat Comments - July 2022

A total of 7,901 goats were listed on AuctionsPlus commercial sales throughout July – a 39% rise from the previous month. Mirroring the trend across the sheep and cattle markets, prices across all goat categories eased from June.

Overall clearance for the month reached 46%, as confidence across all markets dropped significantly throughout July. Of the goats sold during the month, just 18% were sold at auction, 45% were sold prior to auction using the “buy now” feature, with the remaining 37% sold after auction - the result of post-sale negotiations between selling and purchasing agents.

NSW accounted for 56% of monthly listings, while Queensland consisted of 43.5%. The top listing regions for the month included Western NSW (3,493 head), Southern Queensland (1,989 head) and Western Queensland (1,350 head). On the purchasing side, Queensland accounted for 61% of goats purchased, while NSW purchases accounted for 30%.

Rangeland does had the largest offering for the month, with 3,568 head. The category reached a 55% clearance rate, with prices ranging from $90-$113/head, to average $105/head - back $53 from June. From Chinchilla, Queensland, a line of 314 Rangeland does aged 1-6 years and weighing 27kg lwt returned $113/head, or 414c/kg lwt, and travelled to a buyer from Wee Waa, NSW. Another highlight for the category consisted of two lines of Rangeland does from Broken Hill, NSW, totalling 1,300 head. The does were aged between 1-2 years, averaged 27kg lwt, and sold to $105/head to a buyer from Queensland.

Boer/Rangeland does had a total offering of 2,820 head across the month, with the category averaging $191/head – back $13 from last month with a subdued clearance of 36%. From Jindera, NSW, a line of Boer/Rangeland does aged 22-23 months and averaging 38kg lwt sold to $300/head, or 796c/kg lwt, to a buyer from Wodonga, Victoria.

While overall buck listings were sparse across the month of July, Boer Bucks sold to an 82% clearance rate across the 251 head offered, averaging $529/head - back $266 from last month. A highlight for the category included a line of 9 Red Boer Bucks from Morvern, Queensland, which sold for $500 above their reserve price, to return $1,000/head. The bucks aged 9-10 months weighed an average of 38kg lwt and were purchased by a buyer from Cunnamulla, Queensland.
