2023 kicked off where 2022 ended for the online goat market, with AuctionsPlus commercial goat listings for January falling to 1,557 head – down 76% on December 2022.

The continued reduction in listings online is largely associated to the pull back in demand, as the tough price outlook continues.

Post auction negotiations continue to dominate commercial goat sales, as sellers and buyers utilise the 48 hours after a sale to reach a common price point. Of the goats sold online during January, 38% were purchased at auction – up from just 8% in December. Post-sale negotiations accounted for 60% of this month's sales, while the “meet reserve” feature accounted for 2%.
