AuctionsPlus commercial cattle sales results this week reflected the ongoing demand for proven breeding cattle, as seasonal conditions continue to see producers dig very deep for quality lines. For the young cattle market, an increased proportion of weaner steers out of central and western Queensland was met by steady demand, with overall excellent clearance rates for the week.

As displayed on the weaner and yearling offering heat map, a steady supply of cattle was offered out of central and western Queensland this week, while the supply of southern weaners contracted for the second consecutive week. Given the significant change in the proportional mix of southern and northern young steers, AuctionsPlus national average prices eased back this week, with all but the heaviest category declining. 200-280kg steers averaging $103 lower on last week, at $1,578/head, with the 1,624 head selling to a 94% clearance rate. The two heavier categories, both fell by similar amounts, with 280-330kg steers averaging $94/head lower, at $1,810/head, while 330-400kg steers dropped $87, to average $2,066/head.

W&Y Offering purchases

The demand for the heaviest steer lines continued to be extremely hot, with the 1,235 head selling to a 97% clearance rate – averaging $28 higher on last week, at $2,445/head.

Clearance rates were just as healthy through the lighter young heifer lines, ranging from 86% for the mid-weight 280-330kg lines, while the 1,157 head of 330-400kg heifers sold to 99% - albeit with the weekly average slipping $64 on last week, to $1,994/head.

Heifers 400kg+ jumped $189 for the week to average $2,377/head, with an 82% clearance rate for the very thin 449 head offered.

Competition between buyers was again extremely fierce this week for proven and quality breeders. PTIC heifer prices jumped $352 this week, averaging $2,786/head – with the highest demand lines rising well into the mid $3,000 range. The overall PTIC heifer clearance rate at the conclusion of the auction was 65% for the 1,243 head offered. However, if recent weeks are any indication, this clearance rate will rise towards 80% over the next few days, as post-auction negotiations continue. Results for the 804 PTIC cows offered this week mirrored the PTIC heifers, also selling to very strong demand – jumping $261 higher, to $2,495/head.

Eastern States

An overall excellent offering of NSM cows with CAF hit the market this week, with a sharp jump in average prices – up $586, to average $4,138/head. One of the largest breeding offerings this week was out of Marulan on the Southern Tablelands of NSW, with 170 NSM Angus cows with 170 CAF selling to $3,400/unit. The aged Angus cows, ranging from 8-12yrs, averaged 600.3kg liveweight, with the 170 calves ranging from 42-120kg liveweight. Similarly, 56 NSM Angus cows with 56 CAF, out of Kingston, SA, sold to $3,640/head, with the cows 6-7yrs of age, averaging 562.6kg liveweight. The 56 calves at foot averaged 160kg.
