AuctionsPlus sheep and lamb listings increased by 23% this week, to total 123,378 head. NSW had the largest increase in lambs offered this week, particularly for crossbred and Merino wether lambs. Demand for new season lambs continued to fuel the market, with key restocking regions including Central Western NSW, Riverina NSW and Southwest Victoria securing a vast majority of the crossbred and Merino wether lambs offered this week.
New season lambs continued to flow into the market, with a total of 75,590 head offered across the six categories. An easing in prices across the largest crossbred and Merino wether lamb categories was noted, however prices remained robust throughout.
Crossbred lambs accounted for 31% of the offering, with 38,621 head offered - with a 93% clearance rate registered. Prices ranged from $108-$236, to average $159/head, or 451c/kg liveweight – back $3 from last week. A standout line consisting of 318 second cross White Suffolk/Merino future breeder ewe lambs weighing 50.1kg liveweight returned the top price. The ewe lambs were Apr-May ’21 drop from Tomingley, NSW, destined for Cowra, NSW.
Merino wether lambs totalled 13% of the offering this week, with 16,166 head. Both demand and prices for the category slipped slightly this week, with a 47% jump in numbers offered. Prices averaged $136/head – back $6, with clearance rates remaining robust at 83%. Merino ewe lambs have seen a steady jump in demand in recent weeks. A small offering of 2,597 head was met with strong demand, as the category returned a 93% clearance, with prices increasing $61 to average $234/head.
First cross ewe lamb numbers totaled 4,932 head this week - back 58% from last week. Despite the reduced offering, clearance levels for the category slipped from last week, with a total of 42% of lines selling – an indication of seller and purchaser prices points misaligning, as high-quality lines were snapped up by bidders. Prices for the category ranged between $190-$358, to average $277/head – up $33.
Composite/other breed lambs accounted for 9% of the offering, with 10,990 head. Prices ranged from $131-$319, to average $168/head – up $4, with 71% of lines in the category selling.
Although still few and far between, the joined ewe categories registered a rise in numbers this week, with a total of 6,419 head offered across the eight categories. Station mated Merino ewes were the largest category across the joined ewe offering, with a total of 2,410 head. Prices spanned from $142-$273, to average $210/head, with the clearance rate returning 100%.
Non-station mated Merino ewes accounted for 11% of the total offering, with 13,755 head listed this week. The clearance rate for the category increased to 95% this week, with prices ranging between $127-$311, to average $215/head - back $21 from last week. A large rise in clearance coupled with easing prices is indicative of vendors eager to sell NSM stock prior to the end of year.
