A 6 % increase in supply this week was registered for exclusive AuctionsPlus sheep and lamb listings, totalling 69,940 head – the second consecutive week of increased throughput. Prices fluctuated heavily, as supply and quality impacted prices. Joined ewes witnessed price increases across the majority of the indictive categories, while lambs reported an overall cheaper trend. Despite the cheaper market, clearance remained robust through the lamb categories, as reports of good rain across the eastern states helped fuel buyer demand.
Lamb categories as reported saw cheaper trends overall, with only two categories reporting price increases - Merino ewe lambs and Shedding breed lambs. Merino ewe lambs averaged $199 for the healthy 4,710 head offered – achieving a 67% clearance and increasing $24/head on last week. Shedding breed lambs continue to be highly sought after, once again increasing in price for their third consecutive week. At a 97% clearance rate for the 1,289 head offered, the category increased $14 from last week, to average $315/head.
Composite/other breed lambs saw a jump in listings this week, with 4,020 head offered. The larger offering resulted in a decline in prices, indicated by the $125 fall from last week, to average $176/head. Crossbred lambs also reported cheaper trends, decreasing $38, to average $155/head. Despite the lower prices, clearance remained strong through the crossbred lines with 90% achieved for the 4,732 head on offer.
25,000 head of joined ewes were offered this week, with the majority of those being offered as SIL Merino ewes. Prices moved substantially for some categories, with 5 of the 8 joined categories increasing in price this week. SM shedding breed ewes increased $129 for the 1,103 head offered – achieving an 87% clearance rate and averaging $419/head.
This was largely influenced by a line of 11 station mated Australian White ewes from Temora NSW, which sold for $620/head. These ewes were 10 – 11 months of age, averaged 82kg liveweight and joined to Australian White stud rams.
SIL Merino ewes were once again in large supply with 12,503 head offered, and despite decreasing $18 on last week, the category averaged $261/head and achieved a strong 76% clearance rate. SIL first cross ewes also decreased from last week, falling $4 to average $308/head for the 4,963 head on offer.
NSM lines this week largely fell in value, with only one indicative category reporting dearer trends. Merino ewe hoggets increased by $13 to average $212 for the tight 745 head on offer. NSM shedding breed ewes and Merino ewes both fell in value this week, largely due to only one 1-line selling for each category.
