AuctionsPlus weekly commercial sheep and lamb listings for Tuesday 30th August totaled 44,598 head, a 28% increase from the previous week.The increased offering was a result of a rise in the National Lamb Sale, with 27,265 head offered, as new season lamb listings continued to increase. Prices across three of the five lamb categories rose on last week, with strong clearance rates achieved - highlighting the rising demand in the lamb market. Non-station mated (NSM) categories also performed well this week, with most categories recording price rises on last week – however clearance rates were mixed across the categories. Post-sale negotiations following the close of Tuesday’s sale resulted in all listed categories finding sales for at least one line.
Crossbred lambs saw a total of 7,835 head offered, with the category averaging $9 higher on last week, at $141/head. The increased offering failed to impact clearance rates with post sale negotiations seeing a 92% clearance by late Thursday – up from 85% at the immediate close of sales. From Nyngan, NSW, a line of 208 Border Leicester/Merino mixed sex trade lambs weighing 58kg lwt returned the top price for the category at $173/head.
Merino wether lambs recorded the largest lamb category listing for the week, with 16,569 head, up 112% on last week. Prices averaged $111/head – up $10. The increased offering saw clearance rates soften slightly on last week sitting at 89% late Thursday – back from 96% last week. From Hay, NSW, a line of 340 store wether lambs weighing 36kg lwt, returned $111/head and are headed south to a buyer in Victoria.
Merino ewe lamb listings eased on last week, with 650 head offered, continuing the recent trend of seasonally small numbers for the category. Averaging $157/head, the category registered the only weekly decline for lambs, down $43. A line of 420 future breeder ewe lambs from Thallon, Queensland, weighing 44kg lwt, returned $176/head and are headed across the border to a buyer in NSW.
First cross ewe lambs experienced the highs of post-sale negotiations this week, with the 2,111 head reaching a 70% clearance by late Thursday – up from 55% at the immediate close of sale. Averaging $266/head the category registered a $52 increase on last week. Returning the top price for the category at $356/head was a line of 212 scanned empty Border Leicester/Merino ewes, weighing 58kg lwt from Tottenham, NSW.
Joined ewe listings were down on last week, with the 8,240 head accounting for 19% of the total offering. SIL first cross ewes registered the largest category with 2,199 head, which sold to a 47% clearance rate. Prices for the category averaged $150/head – back $133 on last week.
SIL Merino ewes saw the 1,405 head offering average $139/head – back $72. Post-sale negotiations lifted the 27% clearance rate at the immediate close of sale to 92% late Thursday. From Condobolin, NSW, a line of 380 ewes SIL to Border Leicester rams, weighing 66kg lwt, returned $232/head.
SIL shedding breed ewes continue to be in high demand recording the highest clearance across the joined ewe categories, with the 1,301 head achieving a 100% clearance – lifting from 69% at the immediate close of sale. Averaging $216/head the category averaged $158 lower on last week. From Barham, NSW, a line of 196 Dorper ewes SIL to Dorper rams, weighing 42kg lwt, returned $214/head.
Unjoined ewes accounted for 17% of the offering, with 7,366 head. Prices for three of the five categories were up on last week, with demand also up across the categories.
Merino ewe hoggets saw increased demand from buyers post sale with the 2,122 head seeing clearance lift from 7% at the immediate close of sale to 43% late Thursday. Prices for the category averaged $236/head – up $10.
Unjoined Merino ewes registered a $17 rise on last week, averaging $158/head across the 3,360 head offered. Demand for the category was strong with the 85% clearance rate up from 45% last week. From Pyramid Hill, Victoria, a line of 195 NSM ewes, weighing 55kg lwt returned $200/head.
Shedding breed ewes averaged $187/head, registering the only price decrease across the unjoined categories, down $30. Prices ranged from $110-$254/head, with a clearance rate of 47% across the 1,294 head.
