AuctionsPlus sheep and lamb listings for Tuesday’s commercial sales totalled 43,131 head this week - a 7% contraction on last week. While the lamb market returned mixed results, with three of the five regular categories averaging lower week-on-week, the joined and unjoined ewe results were indicative of some restored confidence from buyers, as the majority of categories registered both higher averages and clearance rates.

The National Sheep Sale had a total of 16,662 head offered, which reached a 52% clearance rate immediately post sale, which rose to 62% following post sale negotiations. The National Lamb Sale had an offering of 26,469 head, which reached a clearance of 44% at the immediate closure of the auction, which rose to 48% in the 48 hours following the sale.

Crossbred lambs were the largest category this week, accounting for 31% of the total offering, with 13,229 head. Prices averaged $123/head, back $11 on last week, with the category registering a 40% clearance. From Forbes, NSW, a line of March ’22 drop Poll Dorset/Border Leicester/Merino mixed sex lambs weighing 37kg lwt returned $150/head

Merino wether lambs also averaged back this week, at $106/head - $12 behind the previous week with clearance levels remaining subdued at 39%. A line of Mar/Apr ’22 drop poll Merino wether lambs from Eudunda, SA, weighing 39kg lwt returned $127/head.

Shedding breed lambs returned a positive result this week, with prices averaging $145/head - up $27 from last week, with the category registering a 100% clearance. Topping the category this week was a line of January ’22 drop Australian White future breeder ewe lambs weighing 40kg lwt, which returned $276/head from Junee, NSW Riverina.

Joined ewe listings accounted for 25% of the catalogue this week. SIL Merino ewes were the largest category, with 4,511 head - accounting for 10.5% of the total listings. Prices ranged from $120-$250/head, to average $181 - up $20 from last week. Clearance rates for the category were also stronger this week, reaching 82%. A line of 588 two-year-old Poll Merino ewes from Thallon, Queensland, weighing 49kg lwt returned $250/head and will travel to a buyer from Longreach, Queensland.

SIL first cross ewes averaged $16 back this week, at $254/head, with the category reaching a clearance of 47% across the 1,378 head offered.

SIL shedding breed ewes totalled 1,939 head, which averaged $320/head this week - back $134 from last week. Clearance rates for the category were strong however, reaching 86%. SIL Composite/other breed ewes rose by $5 from last week to average $214/head. Clearance rates reached 50% following the close of auction across the 1,982 head offered which were then boosted to 94% following post sale negotiations.

Unjoined ewes accounted for 16.5% of the offering this week, with 7,104 head, as prices across all four categories averaged stronger than last week.

NSM Merino ewe hoggets had a total of 1,294 head offered, which returned an average of $213/head - up $29 from last week, with a clearance rate of 47%- up from 16% following the immediate close of Tuesdays’ auction. From Roberston, South Australia, a line of 14-15-month-old Merino hoggets weighing 61kg lwt returned $252/head.

NSM Shedding breed ewes registered a $65 rise from last week to average $233/head with the category returning a 32% clearance. Topping the category at $510/head was a line of two-year-old Australian White NSM ewes from Condowie, South Australia weighing 71kg lwt which returned over twice their reserve price.
