Young changemakers across Australia and New Zealand are being called to step forward and apply for AgriFutures Australia’s evokeAG. 2026 Groundbreakers program.
Previously known as Future Young Leaders, the Groundbreakers program is more than just a speaking opportunity. It is a launchpad for agrifood innovators committed to delivering positive impact across the sector.
Malkah Lara-Muckenschnabl, a 2023 Groundbreakers alum, presented her recruitment solution 'Lymbo' to more than 1,600 delegates at evokeAG. She recalled the experience as both nerve-wracking and transformative.
“Stepping out of your comfort zone is one thing. Doing it in front of a packed auditorium is quite another,” said Ms Lara-Muckenschnabl.
“But the mentoring in the lead-up helped with everything. The structure of the talk, pitch, tone and even how to finish your words.”
Her presentation explored the need to better match candidates and employers in agriculture, especially when soft skills and personality matter as much as qualifications.
“For some participants, Groundbreakers could be an instant life-changing thing", she said.
Since her time on stage, Ms Lara-Muckenschnabl has returned as a mentor to help future Groundbreakers navigate the same journey.
“I've been lucky enough to now sit on the other side and do some mentoring. It’s about helping others line their ducks up after they’ve been a part of the amazing experience.”
From sustainable aquaculture and permaculture in Cape York to recyclable livestock ear tags and indoor farming, evokeAG. Groundbreakers have been driving innovation since 2019.
Ms Alisa Milhaila, a 2025 Groundbreaker and seaweed aquaculture researcher, described the program as a turning point.

“Being part of the Groundbreakers program has been transformative. It gave me exposure to a wide network of producers, innovators, investors and policymakers.
"It helped me grow professionally, but also gave me the confidence and perspective to evolve personally", Ms Mihaila said.
Ms Angela Wakeman, Acting General Manager of Global Innovation Networks at AgriFutures, said the Groundbreakers program is designed to elevate emerging changemakers and accelerate their impact.
“The Groundbreakers Program connects these innovators with the right people, tools and platforms to bring their ideas to life.”
