Family offers big reward to help lasso cattle rustlers
A cattle farming couple are making a call-out for information after the theft of more than 140 prized stock from their rural property.
A two-year-old Blacknose Valais ewe named Epridell Anna has set a new benchmark as the top-priced ewe sold on AuctionsPlus in 2024.
Offered by Epridell Farm in Bald Hills, Victoria, Anna fetched an impressive $8,000 in the AuctionsPlus Weekly Sheep Stud & Genetics Sale on November 11, 2024.
Described as a “beautiful F3 ewe with incredible, almost perfect markings”, Anna boasted a fat score of 3 and a weight of 41kg. The listing highlighted her as an exceptional addition for breeders looking to advance their Valais programs.
The buyer, based in Gin Gin, Western Australia, has secured a standout ewe from a breed that is gaining popularity for its unique appearance and market appeal.
Blacknose Valais sheep, often dubbed the “cutest sheep in the world”, are renowned for their striking black and white markings, long wool, and docile temperament.
Originating from the Swiss Alps, these sheep were initially bred for their hardiness and ability to thrive in extreme mountain climates. However, their distinctive looks and friendly nature have made them a favourite in boutique breeding programs and hobby farms worldwide.
Epridell Farm has been at the forefront of promoting the Valais Blacknose in Australia, alongside their work with Mediterranean miniature donkeys and Highland cattle.
Top-selling commercial ewes $356/head on AuctionsPlus
A standout line of 194 Primeline SIL (Scanned in Lamb) ewe lambs from Narromine, NSW, achieved an average price of $356 per head in a recent AuctionsPlus sale, making them the top commercial ewe's sold on AuctionsPlus in 2024.
Offered by the Waterloo Partnership, these July/August 2023 drop ewes showcased exceptional breeding potential and quality.
The mob, described as “the ultimate lamb factories of the future”, had been joined to Lambpro Primeline Shedders with a scanning result of 165% in lamb.
The ewes weighed an average of 66.8kg, with individual weights ranging from 48kg to 89kg. Their fat scores highlighted excellent condition, with 73% achieving a score of 4 (16-20mm fat depth).
