AuctionsPlus Weekly Sheep & Lamb Summary - Week ending Friday 23rd December 2022
It was a slow first week for AuctionsPlus commercial cattle, with attention firmly fixed upon the kick-off to the weaner sales through southern regions.
The first week of commercial sheep sales in 2023 saw a total of 23,344 head offered on AuctionsPlus across the Tuesday sheep and lamb sales.
The subdued, even dull, nature of the lamb market in 2022 has been plagued by the wet conditions, lack of finish on lambs and mixed restocker demand.
Listings dropped away for the final AuctionsPlus commercial cattle sale of 2022, down 48% from last week to 9,679 head – the lowest weekly level since August.
The National Lamb Sale saw a total of 62,291 head offered across 188 lots – accounting for 59% of the weekly offering.
While the recent decline in the cattle market has corresponded with a run of dry conditions, it’s far more indicative of a market with motivated sellers and very watchful buyers.
Of the goats sold online during November, 54% were purchased at auction – up from just 9% in October.
The National Lamb Sale registered a total of 54,868 head offered across 184 lots – accounting for 51% of the weekly offering.
